Pre Commissioning Engineer
The role
Omexom Ireland require a Pre-Commissioning Engineer to play a key part in our organisational success, ensuring commitments to our customers are delivered on time and to the highest standard.
Reporting to the Commissioning Engineer, the key duties of the role are outlined below
Key duties:
· Verify that primary, secondary, protection, and control equipment meets all specification requirements and is in a fit state for connection to the ESB system
· Carry out and assess on‑site testing of high‑voltage primary plant and associated secondary equipment such as protection schemes.
· Conduct functional verification of protection scheme designs, ensuring compliance with approved design standards, elementaries, and ESB commissioning standards. [
· Assist in the development of site‑specific risk assessments (RAMS), method statements, test plans, and test reports.
· Contribute to improvement and development of commissioning procedures and work instructions within ESB.
· Plan, coordinate, and deliver pre‑commissioning and commissioning project activities, ensuring alignment with safety, quality, and schedule requirements.
· Liaise with design specialists to resolve technical issues and improve quality of pre‑commissioning works.
· Support verification of substation control systems, SCADA, RTUs, and associated configurations prior to commissioning.
· Confirm equipment compliance with ESB design standards and technical specifications
· Create and maintain comprehensive pre‑commissioning and commissioning records, test sheets, and compliance documentation as required by ESB Commissioning Standards.
· Provide technical input, training, and mentoring to colleagues in pre‑commissioning and commissioning teams.
· Assist in troubleshooting, system integrations, and technical validations prior to energisation.
Essential criteria:
A third level qualification in an electrical or electronics discipline, preferably power engineering.
Considerable previous experience in a Commissioning Engineer role within the electrical supply industry, including experience of carrying out all relevant tests using highly specialised equipment.
Demonstrated experience in testing HV primary plant (e.g., transformers, breakers) and secondary equipment such as protection schemes.
Strong knowledge of commissioning standards, procedures, and Transmission & Distribution systems.
Understanding of power system protection principles, protection devices, and associated software tools.
Familiarity with SCADA, RTUs, and substation control systems (e.g., IEC protocols, MicroSCADA/SICAM).
Comprehensive knowledge of ESB Networks’ rules for work in HV substations and operational safety procedures
Ability to complete functional verification, commissioning records, test reports, and compliance documentation
An ability to work closely and effectively with management and project teams to successfully achieve challenging targets across a number of projects.
Flexibility to work across various ESB substation sites nationwide, including travel as required for pre‑commissioning tasks
The flexibility and adaptability to succeed within a demanding business.
Full clean driving license and access to a vehicle.
Proof of eligibility to work in Ireland.
